Join Vincent Tolentino, Educator at The Frick Collection, New York, for an online private tour of The Frick, discussing the history of the Gilded Age mansion at 1 East 70th Street and exploring high-resolution images of art in the permanent collection. Participants will have the ability to ask questions in real time throughout and the tour will take place via Zoom and should last about an hour. The collection includes works by Bellini, Rembrandt, Vermeer, Holbein, Fragonard, Gainsborough, Veronese, and Turner.

Cost is £8 per device/computer for members (£10 for visitors) and places are limited. You will be sent the zoom link a few days prior to the event.

STOKE BRUERNE and HOLDENBY HOUSE

We will stop at Stoke Bruerne by the side of the Grand Union Canal before our visit to Holdenby House and Gardens in the afternoon for a tour and tea/coffee and cake. Stoke Bruerne is a delightful spot where we will take a 35min trip on a narrowboat to the Blisworth Tunnel, opened in 1805, and visit the Canal Museum and gift shop and cafeteria where coffee and snacks are also available.

A fish and chip lunch of cod, chips and peas at the picturesque Boat Inn alongside the canal is included.

 Holdenby was once Elizabethan England’s greatest house built as a palace in 1583, the largest in England. It was the palace of James I and Charles I. It has been owned by the Lowther family since 1709. This family dates from 940 AD and has produced more MPs than any other family in England. The 20 acres of Grade 1 gardens are listed in the book ‘1001 Gardens to See Before you Die’.

The cost of £47.50 includes the coach journey, canal boat trip, lunch, entrance to Holdenby and afternoon tea/coffee and cake. Please deduct £7.50 if lunch is not required.

On Thursday 23rd April 2020 we have arranged a visit to see the fascinating paintings in the Grade one listed cottage at Piccotts End, Hemel Hempstead. This will be a self-drive visit with the possibility of some car sharing (see below). Arrival time 2.15pm.

Cost £10 per person to include the visit and talk by one of the owners, and a cup of tea, with a full cream tea being available for an additional £5.

On Tuesday 4th June we have arranged for a private visit and tour of the local organic prize winning garden run by Alison Green. It is a garden of many rooms which has been featured in Homes and Gardens and Country Living with both recommending a visit. 

The cost is £15 but this includes entry, tea and cake, and a guided tour. Parking is free but if you need a lift or have a space in your car then please let me know and I will try to arrange some car sharing. Crews Hill station is only a short walk away and if you want to come by train then I may be able to arrange to pick you up there as an alternative.

It is located within the M25 approximately a 10-15 minute walk from Crews Hill Station on the Hertford North Line from Moorgate.

Burnt Farm Ride is the narrow lane on the Jolley’s pet store bend in Crews Hill at the junction of Theobalds Park Road and Cattlegate Road.

The road name is on a gate on the right along the lane.

Entry is via the second set of electronic gates (the wooden ones), on the right opposite the last cottage on the left. The house name is on the fence next to a pedestrian gate that is open.

There is parking for several cars in the front drive or along the lane. Please park beyond the property to avoid blocking other resident’s gates.

This is one of Britain's grandest and best preserved stately homes.

There are the eighteenth century gardens to explore as well as an outstanding collection of fine art, furniture, tapestries, and porcelain in the house.The Baroque state rooms are magnificent and form a fascinating contrast to the surrounding country park.

Cost of this trip is £32.50 which includes the coach, drivers gratuity and guided tour of the house and garden. 

Pick up will be from Enfield Cecil Road, outside Argos/Lidl at 9am and the Everyman (Odeon) cinema in Barnet at 9.20 am. We will leave Boughton for home at about 4.45pm.

In June we held the first of our small group visits to the Guildhall Gallery. 8 members attended and all of us thoroughly enjoyed the visit.

Lullingstone Roman Villa traces three centuries of affluent Roman life and has splendid mosaic floors and one of the earliest private Christian chapels.

Lullingstone Castle dates back to the fifteenth century and has remained in the Hart Dyke family ever since. The house has had many royal visitors and now is surrounded by the World Garden with a cactus house, a temperate house and a national collection of eucalyptus.

The Higgins Museum Bedford has been recently transformed to feature new exhibition galleries, and offers a full and varied programme of special exhibitions events and learning activities.

An elegant riverside mansion built in the late 1740's. It is situated in 3 acres of gardens including an ornamental Saxon island on the Great Ouse river.
