London: One Capital, Two Millennia Three Decisive Moments

On Tuesday 17th November 2026 with Charlie Forman

At Jubilee Hall, 2 Parsonage Lane, Enfield, EN2 0AJ

Doors open at 10.00am for coffee in advance of lecture starting at 10.30 am.

London is ever evolving. This study day picks three key moments – each separated by a thousand years -  to show their critical importance in shaping our capital.

Fixing a bridge. The Roman bridge determined where the city grew. This talk shows how it shaped London and how it changed when, 1,700 years later, the capital finally built itself more river crossings.

Siting a palace. A thousand years after the bridge comes the palace at Westminster. This talks follows from Edward the Confessor, through 6 royal palaces, to the continuing royal presence today.

Building on Gold. The 2012 Olympic Games was not just a sporting event. This talk’s a speculation for the millennium to come. The new city centred on the Olympic Park may prove a catalyst for shifting the city’s economic centre of gravity from the wealthy west to the expectant east.
